Senior Editor Job Application

Are you a literary editor with extensive industry and/or freelance experience? Do you know your Chicago Manual of Style from your Hart’s Rules? Are you passionate about fantasy, sci-fi, and YA fiction, and keen to be part of the next big thing?

If so, we want to hear from you.

Heroic Books is an innovative multimedia publisher working to revolutionise the publishing industry. Combining traditional publishing with the TV, film, and gaming industries, Heroic Books is poised to become the one-stop shop for everything fantasy-related. Its growing list of accomplished authors includes Davis Ashura, C. E. Bernard, and Jason Link.

The Senior Editor’s work is varied, and the successful candidate will be experienced, flexible, and conscientious. Heroic Books is still a young company, and we work with the energy of a start-up—this means you might be developing a manuscript one moment, writing a blurb the next, and discussing which submissions to take forwards the next. You’ll have an active say not only in deciding which books Heroic publishes, but also in helping Heroic expand into new areas.

Title

Senior Editor

Where?

Flexible: Heroic Books is based in Liverpool and has offices available for local employees, but remote applicants are also invited to apply.

Duties

  • COMMISSIONING: Work closely with the editorial team and Managing Editor to process submissions and commission new titles.

  • LEADING AND TRAINING: Take the reins in terms of assisting and training less-experienced editorial staff both for Heroic and its sister company, ReadKin.

  • COPY-WRITING: You’ll be primarily responsible for producing cover copy for Heroic’s titles. This process involves liaising with authors and our editorial and marketing teams.

  • DEVELOPMENTAL EDITING: Once a manuscript is accepted for publication, it goes to a developmental editor. You’ll work to assess, critique, and improve our accepted manuscripts so that they’re watertight in terms of plot, character, structure, and pacing prior to publication, and will then liaise with the author to ensure revision occurs according to the production schedule.

  • LINE EDITING: After a developmental edit is complete, a line editor takes over. You’ll go through the manuscript line by line, using Microsoft Word’s ‘Track Changes’ feature to improve expression and catch errors and typos. This line edit includes copy-editing.

  • PROOFREADING: From time to time, the Senior Editor may be expected to assist with proofreading efforts.

  • READKIN: Get involved with Heroic’s sister company, ReadKin, assisting as and when you’re able.

  • COMMUNICATION: Liaise with authors, freelancers, and teammates to ensure projects move forwards at the appropriate pace.

  • GETTING INVOLVED: Participate in company meetings and get stuck into side projects! We like editors with the energy to follow through on their ideas.

Candidate Profile

  • EXPERIENCED: Applicants should have worked in an editorial capacity for a publishing house, editing company, media company, or similar business for at least three years. Full-time freelancers are also invited to apply. We’d like to see examples of your work and positive references from previous employers/clients.

  • PUBLISHING SAVVY: The successful applicant will be commercially aware and knowledgeable of current publishing trends. Recent bookselling experience is a plus.

  • COMPUTER LITERATE: The successful applicant will complete the majority of their work on Microsoft Word. The company also uses Google Drive, Slack, Gmail, and Zoom for internal communication. Applicants should be comfortable using these programmes.

  • PASSIONATE: Applicants should be able to demonstrate knowledge of and enthusiasm for fantasy, sci-fi, and/or YA fiction; reading; writing; publishing; and media.

  • ADAPTABLE: Applicants should be flexible, adaptable, and dependable, particularly in terms of managing a varied workload, attending scheduled meetings, and meeting strict deadlines.

  • PERSONABLE: Applicants will be communicating a lot with authors and working as part of a team, so it’s vital that they’re able to play nicely with others. Only communicative, friendly, and professional candidates will be considered.
